I just gave the android app a try and like it generally. There's however one issue: I can't find an option to not mark messages as read automatically when I open them. Did I miss it or is that really not possible? As ridiculous as it sounds, that's basically a deal-breaker for me, as I use read status as a marker for messages that I still need to handle.

That option is actually well hidden though ;)
Go to Settings - account settings (to the account where you wish to have this) - general settings - advanced => untick the "mark as read when opened :)

Also when you are in the mail view itself you can mark read/unread on a per-mail-basis, too, via the menu on the upper right. But I guess that one you already found?

Thanks! I did find that one one, and in the meantime also find the setting you described. I guess I need to get more accustomed to every item being a possible button with modern flat, material themes - I only clicked on the folder icon next to the account and that brings up something else :)
A crash (report sent) helped that discovery because it showed that the app is based on k9, so I knew the setting should be there.
